Blue Titan Life
By: Jen Murphy
Before Blue Titan, I used to dread working out. On the days I didn’t make an excuse, I had to drag myself to the gym. I often felt hopeless- all this time spent at the gym and not really getting anything out of it. I wanted to get in better shape just for my own well-being but wasn’t sure how.
When I got engaged, I decided I had to change things up if I wanted to look and feel my best on my wedding day, and every day after that. I’d heard about CrossFit but didn’t think I’d be any good at it, so I did a few trials at a couple different boxes- none of them seemed to be a good fit for me. I started to feel discouraged, like maybe I was being too much of a dreamer to think I could ever do what the CrossFitters do. I didn’t want to give up so I started asking around, and that’s when my co-worker recommended Blue Titan- which happened to be right around the corner from my office.
Since I worked so close, I had no excuse not to try it, and I started going to the 5pm CrossFit Lite classes. Everyone was so nice and I was hooked right away- Finally, a place where I felt comfortable being a beginner. CrossFit can be really intimidating to someone who doesn’t know anything about it, but the coaches understand that we all have to start somewhere. They emphasize how important it is to have good form and we’d always go over the movements together as a group, whether you’d been at it for years or just starting out. It wasn’t long before CrossFit became the highlight of my day and I was already seeing results- both mentally and physically.
After a few months, my office moved so I couldn’t make the Lite classes anymore. I was forced to hit to the regular CrossFit class and I was really nervous because I wasn’t sure I was ready. Luckily the coaches taught me well and it turned out to be an easy transition. We still went over the movements and no one was judgmental if you forgot how to do something or if it was your first time. I still had plenty of things to work on, but the coaches help you get there little by little. I remember the days when I couldn’t do a power clean in one fluid movement- first a deadlift, then a hang clean. I didn’t think I could ever do it the right way. But Coach Ryannon knew I had it in me. So during one long EMOM of power cleans, she stood by me the entire time and helped me through it. After what seemed like forever, I finally got it. “Like a row,” she said. And then it just clicked. She knew I could do it, I just had to believe in myself.
It’s been about a year and a half since I first joined BT and I couldn’t be more grateful for this place. The coaches are awesome, the members are friendly and supportive, and best of all it’s a fun and safe environment to get fit. While I may not be the strongest or fastest, I’ve done a complete 180 since first joining. I’m stronger than I ever thought I could be, performing movements I never imagined possible. I’ve still got a long way to go, but the important thing is that I have a newfound love for exercise and that’s all I was really hoping for in the first place. I should probably take more days off, but for me it takes more discipline to take a rest day than to come for class. I never thought I’d feel this way, and I owe it all to Blue Titan.
